Amodei.

If you’re a college student reading this, or a parent watching your kid navigate this, you’re probably thinking: '‘Oh shit, now what?”

First, take a deep breath.

Yes, AI is disrupting work and society. But I believe in the spirit, ingenuity, and resilience of humanity. Major technological shifts always create disruption before they create opportunity. AI will be no different.

There may be short-term impact. But the long-term story is one of adaptation, not replacement.

What I’ve Learned in 11 Years

I’ve been at Salesforce for over a decade, working in both professional services and customer success. I’m not a recruiter, but I’ve seen the ebbs and flows of hiring needs both at Salesforce and across dozens of enterprise customers.

Over the years, I’ve had customers ask me to help them understand staffing models for best-in-class teams. E-commerce teams. Digital teams. Centers of excellence. Salesforce practices. Everything in between.

They’ve asked me to craft job descriptions. Review their hiring strategies. Share examples of similar roles at Salesforce.

Here’s what I’ve learned: The jobs that survive aren’t the ones that avoid AI. They’re the ones that embrace it.

The question isn’t whether AI will change your job. It’s whether you’ll be ready when it does.

What I Would Do If I Were in College Right Now

1. Enjoy College

Have fun. Make friends. Explore your interests. Learn about life. Study. Work out. Join clubs. Volunteer. Be an athlete if you are one.

College is about more than job preparation. It’s about becoming a well-rounded person who can think critically, communicate clearly, and adapt to change.

Don’t sacrifice that for AI anxiety.

2. Don’t Freak Out About Your Major

I’ve come to realize that majors don’t matter as much as you think in the real world.

Yes, specialized fields like finance, engineering, or medicine still require specific degrees. But AI is transforming all jobs, not just entry-level ones.

Here’s the important part: Not everyone should go study computer science and artificial intelligence right now.

We need perspectives from all professions. Law. Medicine. Business. Science. English. Sociology. Psychology. History.

In fact, sociology and psychology might be incredibly valuable as the world debates AI safety, transparency, and ethics. We need people who understand human behavior, not just algorithms.

Your major gives you a lens through which to see the world. AI gives you the tools to act on what you see.

3. Get Certified in AI Platforms Now

This is non-negotiable.

Take classes and complete certifications for the following AI platforms:

For everyday work:

Anthropic Claude

OpenAI ChatGPT

Google Gemini

Microsoft Copilot (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)

Slackbot (widely used for workplace collaboration)

For coding:

Claude Code (Anthropic)

Codex (OpenAI)

GitHub Copilot (Microsoft)

For business operations:

Salesforce Agentforce (sales, service, marketing automation)

Start here. Explore niche platforms as you discover your career path.

Why these platforms?

You’re probably already using Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 in college. 95% of businesses use one or the other. You will use their AI tools regardless of your industry.

Claude Code, Codex, and GitHub Copilot are becoming the new standard for AI-assisted development. Even if you’re not a developer, understanding how AI writes code will give you an edge.

Many companies use Slack for collaboration and Salesforce for business operations. Learning these platforms now means you’ll hit the ground running.

Good news for college students: Microsoft offers 12 months of free Microsoft 365 Premium and LinkedIn Premium Career for verified students. Take advantage of it.

These aren’t just tools. They’re the infrastructure of modern work.

4. Build Something, Anything

This is where you prove you can execute.

Build a small e-commerce site selling something you’re passionate about. Create an AI chatbot that answers questions about your favorite topic. Start a newsletter analyzing trends in your field of study. Use AI to create content (videos, graphics, music) and share your process. Build a simple app or tool that solves a problem you personally have.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s proof.

Proof that you can learn new tools independently, create something from nothing, communicate ideas effectively, and stick with a project over time.

When recruiters look at your profile, they’re not just looking for credentials. They’re looking for evidence that you can execute.

Building something, anything, shows you can.

5. Make LinkedIn Your Home Base

Yes, you can have a separate newsletter on Substack or another platform. But that’s one more thing to maintain while you’re juggling classes, internships, and everything else.

LinkedIn is your professional home base. Here’s what you need:

Profile essentials:

A nice, smiling profile picture

A clear “About Me” section with your goals

Any work experience or internships

Your education

Certifications as you earn them

Content strategy: Write about what you’re learning. Share what you’re building. Document your progress.

The goal is to make your profile feel vibrant and catch the attention of recruiters.

Does this sound like a lot of work on top of everything else?

It is.

But it will absolutely help you find a job.

Pace yourself. This is all worth it.

The Most Important Thing to Remember

“AI Won’t Replace Humans—But Humans With AI Will Replace Humans Without AI”
—Harvard Business School Professor Karim Lakhani

The future doesn’t belong to people who fear AI.

It belongs to people who learn to work with AI. Who understand its capabilities and limitations. Who can translate business problems into AI-assisted solutions.

That person can be you.

But only if you start now.

Final Thoughts

I’m optimistic about the future. Not because AI won’t disrupt jobs, but because humans have always adapted to technological disruption.

The printing press didn’t eliminate writers. It created more of them.

The calculator didn’t eliminate accountants. It freed them to do higher-level analysis.

AI won’t eliminate knowledge workers. It will redefine what knowledge work looks like.

The question is: Will you be ready?

About Me

I’m Phil Nowak, a Lead Principal Customer Success Manager at Salesforce, where I’ve spent 11 years working with multi-billion dollar global companies across nearly every industry.

I’m a graduate of MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Business Strategy program, Salesforce’s Accelerate Leadership Program, and I majored in Economics with a Business Minor at Indiana University Bloomington. Go Hoosiers!

I write The Frontier Shift to help people understand how technology, capital, and infrastructure are actually reshaping the world.

Feedback? purity.

The Big Deal

Apple and Google just announced a multi-year deal where Gemini AI will power the next generation of Siri, launching later this year.

Apple evaluated OpenAI and Anthropic but ultimately chose Google’s technology as “the most capable foundation” for Apple Foundation Models.

Key facts:

Roughly $1B per year reported deal

Google’s Gemini estimated around 1.2 trillion parameters versus Apple’s current ~150B

Apple maintains its privacy via on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute

OpenAI’s ChatGPT integration remains (for now)

Three Implications

Market dynamics
Wall Street wanted this. Every analyst segment about Apple eventually lands on the same critique: strong hardware, lagging AI. This deal buys credibility. Both stocks reacted positively.

Regulatory risk
There is real AI competition today. OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, others. Still, regulators may scrutinize the combined influence of Apple and Google across devices, operating systems, and default software.

That conversation is coming.

Apple’s playbook
Apple has done this before. Lean on partners like Intel, Qualcomm, and Google Maps until in-house solutions are ready. This fits the pattern. The difference is the clock is now much faster and the stakes are higher. To that point, they’re already building a 1 trillion parameter model for 2027.

Plain English:

Apple has been struggling to build competitive AI for Siri while OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, xAI’s Grok, and Google’s Gemini have raced ahead.

This deal lets Apple use Google’s advanced models to train their own, buying time while they catch up.

The question is whether Apple can fully replace Google later, or whether AI becomes a permanent dependency.

The Frontier Shift

When I first heard the news, I was shocked. I never imagined these two tech behemoths partnering like this.

My first thought: Would Steve Jobs have done this deal?

Probably not.

Jobs included Google Maps in the 2007 iPhone launch at the last minute. But he came to despise Google after they “copied” iOS features for Android. By 2012, he’d developed Apple Maps and booted Google as the default.

Jobs believed Apple should lead innovation, not follow it. He famously said customers don’t know what they want—Apple tells them. And he insisted Apple should own everything in-house to control design, security, and its destiny.

But here we are. Tim Cook cut a deal with Google to power Siri.

It was their only choice.

That’s how fast AI is moving. The entire industry is racing to train models, secure compute, and lock in energy supplies. Elon Musk thinks we’ll hit AGI by 2026, or 2030 at the latest.

The Apple-Google partnership proves how quickly even an industry leader can fall behind.

The frontier is always shifting.

On This Day

<picture></picture>

Henry Ford’s “Soybean Car” - Wikipedia

🗓 January 13, 1942: Henry Ford received a patent for a plastic automobile, which was 30% lighter than a regular steel car.

Ford’s “soybean car” used agricultural plastics in its construction, pioneering the use of lightweight composite materials in manufacturing.

This innovation foreshadowed today’s use of advanced materials in electric vehicles, robotics, and aerospace.

Breakthroughs do not always come from software first. href="https://time.com/7339685/person-of-the-year-2025-ai-architects/">TIME magazine named the Architects of AI its 2025 Person of the Year.

That choice is not about hype. It is an acknowledgment that AI now sits alongside electricity and the internet as a system that reshapes every industry, every economy, and every institution it touches.

The Big Three

1. AI has crossed from technology into infrastructure

What happened
TIME’s Person of the Year recognized the people building AI systems, not a single inventor or company, signaling that AI is no longer a product category. It is a foundational layer.

Why it matters
Once something becomes infrastructure, society stops asking whether it is useful and starts arguing about who controls it, who pays for it, and how it scales. That shift has already begun.

2. Economic impact is no longer speculative

What happened
TIME’s reporting frames AI as a general-purpose technology capable of reshaping productivity, labor, and global GDP at historic scale.

Why it matters
General-purpose technologies do not add value linearly. They compound. Electricity, computing, and the internet all followed this path. AI is now clearly on the same trajectory.

3. The constraint has shifted from intelligence to resources

What happened
As AI adoption accelerates, attention is moving away from models and toward power, data centers, chips, water, and grid capacity.

Why it matters
This is why political and regulatory pressure is rising. When software scales faster than physical systems, the bottleneck becomes infrastructure, not innovation.

Supporting Headlines

TIME:

The Architects of AI Are TIME’s 2025 Person of the Year

Why the Architects of AI Are TIME’s 2025 Person of the Year

The Story Behind TIME’s 2025 Person of the Year Covers

Plain English

AI is no longer just something tech companies use. It is something every company, every government, and every economy must now plan around.

That is why it is being treated like infrastructure, not an app or software.

The Frontier Shift

When a technology becomes universal, debates stop being about possibility and start being about limits.

AI is now constrained less by how smart it can get and more by how fast societies can build the energy, compute, and physical systems required to support it. That shift is why data centers, grids, and chips are becoming strategic assets, not background utilities.

This is the transition point from innovation to power.

Quoteworthy

“Every industry needs it, every company uses it, and every nation needs to build it. This is the single most impactful technology of our time.”

— Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of Nvidia

Chart of the Day
<div Freedom. A clear line between childhood and adulthood. Getting your license wasn’t just practical. It meant something.

That’s why a simple family dinner conversation caught me off guard.

A few nights ago, I mentioned how quickly self-driving technology is improving. I talked about cars navigating dense and chaotic city traffic during rush hour in Manhattan, waiting their turn at narrow one-lane bridges, behaving less like machines and more like experienced drivers. Almost casually, I said that within a decade, most cars on the road will likely be self-driving.

My 11-year-old son went quiet.

Then he asked a question that tugged at my heartstrings.

“Papa, do you think I won’t ever get to drive?”

For him, driving isn’t a distant idea. It’s something he’s been working toward. It’s the big sized power wheels, go-kart tracks, the racing simulators, and the endless tinkering in our cars. It’s a milestone he’s been preparing for and ocassionally checks in on, “Papa, do you think I’m tall enough to drive?”

I told him the truth as best I could. It will take decades to fully clear human-driven cars from public roads. He’ll get his license. He’ll drive.

But I also believe we’ll reach a tipping point where driving becomes optional, then unusual, then unnecessary. Not because it was banned, but because society gets used to new modes and expectations of transportation.

The next generation of “drivers” may mostly be riders.

Like the woman who gave birth in a Waymo. Like kids who grow up never needing to think about steering wheels or pedals. They won’t miss driving because they never needed it.

That’s when I realized this shift isn’t just technological or economic. It’s cultural.

Just as many of us never learned to use rotary phones or develop film, future generations may look at driving the same way. Something people used to do. A skill that once mattered, then didn’t.

When technology changes behavior at that level, it doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t ask permission. It simply becomes normal.

The question isn’t whether self-driving works.

It’s what happens when a rite of passage quietly disappears.

And whether we notice when it does.

Instead of starting from scratch, AI companies are moving into infrastructure that already exists.

The Frontier Shift

Money talks.

Investment capital flows toward whatever can scale fastest with the fewest new constraints. AI doesn’t just need smarter models. It needs power, land, permits, cooling, and grid access. Bitcoin miners solved those problems early, because cheap energy was the business.

Now those same sites are being repurposed into general-purpose compute infrastructure with steadier, longer-duration revenue.

The deeper signal isn’t about abandoning Bitcoin for AI. It’s about infrastructure. Physical assets and companies that can flex between uses become more valuable than single-purpose ones.

Quoteworthy

The AI Gold Rush won’t be won by models.
It will be won by energy and infrastructure.

The Soapbox

For years, critics called Bitcoin mining wasted energy. Now the same energy footprint is being repurposed as strategic compute capacity.

About Me

I’m Phil Nowak, a Lead Principal Customer Success Manager at Salesforce, where I’ve spent 11 years working with multi-billion dollar global companies across nearly every industry.

I’m a graduate of MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Business Strategy program, Salesforce’s Accelerate Leadership Program, and I majored in Economics with a Business Minor at Indiana University Bloomington. decisions, and automation.

The more reliable and cheaper the power, the more intelligence you can produce.

Takeaway Insight

Regardless of political beliefs, it’s increasingly clear that artificial intelligence is now a national defense priority. America’s adversaries are not slowing down their AI development because of regulation debates. If the U.S. treats AI as optional or purely commercial, it risks falling behind in areas that directly affect security, energy, and economic power.

Forward Signal

In the long term, ideas like solar-powered, space-cooled AI data centers may prove viable. That approach carries higher risk.

3. Aurora pushes autonomous trucking closer to real-world deployment
Aurora continues expanding driverless freight routes on long-haul highways, where roads are more predictable and the economics make sense first. California’s ban on self-driving trucks could soon be lifted, accelerating progress.

Why it matters:
Trucking may normalize self-driving technology before consumer cars do. We are still early.

AI laws and regulations will take years to negotiate, and that’s just in the U.S.
Global alignment is a decade-long problem, if ever.

Sam Altman is reportedly exploring space-based infrastructure ideas, including data centers in orbit, to solve long-term AI power and compute constraints. That sounds extreme until you realize energy is the real bottleneck.

Utilities and governments are reviving nuclear power projects because AI workloads demand always-on, massive, reliable energy. This is infrastructure, not software.

🎙️ The Soapbox

With midterm elections approaching, expect the White House to accelerate efforts to impose federal AI rules that override the states. This will get messy.

While politicians argue on Capitol Hill, in courts, and across cable news, AI companies will keep spending billions to ship models faster. Every release is another stake in the ground. The goal is simple: make AI indispensable before anyone can stop it.

This playbook isn’t new. Uber ran it perfectly. Travis Kalanick pushed aggressive market entry, subsidized adoption, and fought regulators city by city. By the time governments reacted in force, Uber was already the default. AI companies are doing the same thing, just at global scale.

The unresolved question is who becomes the villain.

If society gets addicted to AI-driven productivity, politicians will eventually back down or get voted out. But if AI displaces millions of jobs without credible paths for reskilling, hybrid work, or income support, expect European-style bureaucracy to clamp down hard.

💬 Quoteworthy

“AI is now infrastructure, and this infrastructure, just like the internet, just like electricity, needs factories. They’re not data centers of the past. They are, in fact, AI Factories. You apply energy to it, and it produces something incredibly valuable called tokens.” - Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA

🧩 Explained Simply

The Technological Singularity
Coined by futurist Ray Kurzweil, this describes a point where AI surpasses human intelligence and begins improving itself faster than humans can understand or control. The outcome isn’t clearly good or bad. It’s unknown. That uncertainty is the point.

🔭 Forward Signal

The real inflection arrives in 2026. That’s when companies and individuals stop experimenting and start posting massive revenue numbers driven directly by AI. Expect the first billion-dollar company built by a solo founder or tiny team, possibly a teenager, operating out of a bedroom. It may already exist privately.

What’s harder to find is clarity. Breaking complex ideas down in a way normal people like me can actually understand.

Time is scarce, attention spans are short, and the news cycle never slows down.

Every day, we’re hit with headlines about AI breakthroughs, Bitcoin fear and greed cycles, job automation, energy shortages, critical minerals, geopolitics, and “the next big thing.” I read, watch, and listen to a lot of it.

As an everyday polymath, I enjoy going down rabbit holes. The best feeling is when things finally click — especially when different topics converge into a bigger picture.

That’s where The Frontier Shift comes in.

The Frontier Shift exists to cut through the noise and explain how technology, money, and infrastructure actually shape the future. Not in theory, but in the real world.

I’ve spent my career working across roles and industries, close to customers, products, and systems that often look great on paper but struggle once implemented. I’ve seen how decisions get made — and where they fall short.

What that experience taught me is simple. Change doesn’t happen in isolation. Everything is connected.

Software doesn’t work without hardware.
AI doesn’t scale without energy.
Markets don’t shift without incentives.
And innovation doesn’t matter unless it works in the real world.

That macro-level view — connections, constraints, tradeoffs, and downstream effects — is how I think about everything from AI, digital finance, and Bitcoin to energy, robotics, and critical materials.

This newsletter is where I put that thinking into writing.

Most days, I’ll publish The Frontier Shift Brief. It’s a fast, high-signal snapshot of what’s happening, what actually matters, what it means, and what to keep an eye on next.

Once a week, I’ll publish a short essay. These are slower, more reflective pieces, written to be clear and approachable, not academic or exhaustingly long.

I’m doing this to stay sharp, to learn in public, and to explain things the way I’d explain them to someone over coffee.

The Frontier Shift isn’t about predicting the future. It’s about understanding what’s already changing — and why it matters.

If that sounds useful, you’re in the right place.

Subscribe and join the frontier.

About Me

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
